About the Ookami Karatedo Club

The Ookami karatedo club was established in 2009 by Sensei Jeff Kilbourn. The club is proud to be a part of the Canadian Shorinjiryu Kudaka Karate-Do Federation (www.kudaka.ca).

The style of karate practiced in the club is Shorinjiryu, developed in Okinawa by Dr. Kori Hisataka (1907-1988).

The style is responsible for a number of innovations to karate training including:

  • Use of the heel when kicking
  • Whole body is put into action when executing a technique, using a follow through motion
  • Use of the vertical fist (tate ken)
  • Practice of yakusoku kumite
  • Use of protective equipment to allow the karatedo student to test their techniques without having to hold back their power
  • Practice of weapons (buki ho)

The club motto is “Spiritual Development of Individuality in Mind and Body”

This means that all students should strive to:

  1.  Maintain propriety, etiquette, dignity, and grace;
  2. Gain self-understanding by testing the true meaning of combat;
  3. Search for pure principles of truth, justice, beauty;
  4. Exercise positive personality ie. confidence, courage, determination; and
  5. Always seek to develop your character further by aiming towards perfection and complete harmony with creation.
